MICROSOFT SURFACE HUB 2: OOBE & EXPERIENCE DESIGN
BIG FRAGILE PRODUCT AND COMPLEX SETUP
Partnering closely with a structurally-focused designer and our internal research team, I led wayfinding and experience design efforts for the Surface Hub 2s packaging. The result is a game-changing, user-focused packaging design in this notoriously industrial and complicated category - typically reserved for expert installers.
We even produced an official unboxing video with the marketing team, a first for surface packaging.

MAPPING MOMENTS
I worked with research and ID teams to develop a process for packaging design. Centered in collaboration, it starts and ends with team alignment and has a healthy prototype & test cycle in between.
SCALING RESEARCH METHODS
Our varied approach to research helped us isolate and solve key pain points in the context of the overall, end-to-end experience. This allowed us to get more insights througout the design journey.
HOLISTIC GRAPHIC ELEMENTS
The complex setup process required us to consider and design every moment to avoid critical failures. Each package needed to accommodate at least 3 languages to support the SKU strategy.
We tested early and often with users in the development process. We got feedback on the design of individual moments along the way, with two complete end-to-end unboxing and setup studies for a holistic view of the OOBE.
Instead of depending on a traditional quick start guide, which often got ignored, we mapped graphic moments throughout the experience at critical points in the unboxing journey. This method helped ensure the user had the information they needed when and where they needed it.
